The 60s’ puzzled quest for participation goes on, especially in the continuing assaults on the professions. What is required is coalition-building and institution-building. A more fraternal society would rely on common sympathy and common effort. Gradgrind and all his allies, right and left, traffic in solitude and selfsufficiency. Those who share the new outlook are alert to the weaknesses and the errors of older service strategies. Their populist faith in the family is attractive and their suspicion of the state is not unwarranted, yet, in effect, they advocate a social order that guarantees that some will end as losers.
In looking at families, we are struck again and again by the mysterious capacity of people to give and withhold themselves on their own terms. All this is a plea for compassion first, and then modesty. Giving more support to families is not going to end the grief of children and parents. More generous family policy would do only what any public action can do. It can help parents and children meet the inevitable tragedies of life with more dignity and less needless pain. This is not the millennium, but then family life is not a millennial sort of thing.
This basically economic outlook shows its roots in classical liberalism through its constant efforts to restore vanishing market mechanisms and to bypass any sort of solution that might require people to work together. We are used to Gradgrindism of the right. Now we are hearing it on the left. Today’s Gradgrindism is based on a particular view of the 60s, which holds that money was simply thrown at social problems in the form of expensive and useless programs mainly of benefit to the professionals—trying to feed the sparrows, as the phrase goes, by feeding the horses.
