It must be remembered, however, that because rocks are a product of natural processes, they will rarely be uniform in colour overall. Stone from the same bed in a quarry may provide a variety of hues. Colour changes or variations, which may be marked as with 'blue-hearted' stones, should be considered early in the planning stages of a building and provision made to accommodate them. Stones capable of being polished may show a highly accentuated hue or, indeed, appear entirely different from the unpolished stones.
