Social practices are recurrent meaningful actions recognized and imbued with value by a social group (see, for example, the discussion of practice in Miller & Goodnow, 1995). Social practices include patterns of language use that enable us to infer what is happening in a given interaction. For example, we learn that the phrase “If I were you, what I would do is . ” is usually a precursor to advice and we understand that advice is an action that the speaker presents as being in our best interest and something we might not otherwise do without having it pointed out to us.
Although the study of how enacted social support is communicated is relatively new, several promising lines of research show that it matters what seekers and providers of support say and how they say it (for reviews, see Burleson & Goldsmith, 1998; Burleson & MacGeorge, 2002). This book adds to this growing body of research, contributing a distinctive perspective that is grounded in the study of communication processes. In Chapter 2, I describe the assumptions that are entailed in a communication-based approach and the types of questions and issues that are illumined.
