My favorite expression in Freud’s (1920) writing, from The Ego and the Id, is the description of the ego as a frontier creature existing between the internal and external world. I like the notion of thinking about the analyst as a frontier creature also since he lives in the patient’s and the analyst’s sense of reality, moving back and forth as the analyst helps the patient to dismantle and reconfigure parts of his psychic world.

There are many forms of countertransference-inhibition and guilt that accompany analytic work related to analyzing self-criticism. , Kris, 1991, 1994), it is something that psychoanalysts must get comfortable with analyzing. This is a good thing because most self-criticism burdens the sufferer and can benefit from analysis of its origins and functions. A great deal of self-criticism does, as Freud (1914) and Kris (1990) suggested, protect those we love from negative feelings, criticism, and especially anger.
